Elizabeth City Downtown
Bike Racks
Public Art Project
The Bike Rack Public Art Project is a community art project initiated by Elizabeth City Downtown, Inc. in late 2020. A growing residential community in the Downtown area needed alternatives to car transportation and there were few bike racks in the area at that time due to spacing constraints. The project allowed local businesses to sponsor the placement of bike racks specifically designed for the limited sidewalk spacing available, which were painted by commissioned local artists. The bike rack placement also coincided with growing participation in the annual TarWheel Cycling Event. The art on each bike rack is unique and meant to represent a beloved aspect of the Elizabeth City community. There are currently a total of 34 bike racks throughout the Central Business District.
