National Book Lovers Day & The Recycled Reader

This Saturday get ready to celebrate National Book Lovers Day on August 9th by visiting one of Downtown Elizabeth City's hidden treasures: The Recycled Reader!

Nestled at 606 E. Main Street, The Recycled Reader is more than a bookstore, it's a place where stories, community, and friendships come together. Owned by the incredible husband and wife team Bud and Jane, this family-owned bookstore offers gently used and new books, puzzles, and gifts for every book lover.

When I sat down with Bud and Jane, one thing became clear: their passion for books is only matched by their passion for people. Their dream was originally to open a bookstore to enjoy during retirement. Life had other plans, and they took a leap of faith. After opening on Poindexter Street, moving to Halstead Extension, and eventually returning to Downtown Elizabeth City, they confidently say coming back to Main Street was the best decision they ever made.

Five years ago, downtown was much quieter. Today, they're amazed by the increase in foot traffic, visitors, and the thriving Downtown community. In fact, Bud has been known to jump into a visitor's car just to help them find another local business. That's the kind of hometown hospitality you can't find just anywhere.

So what makes The Recycled Reader different from the big box bookstores? There are no other employees, it's just Bud and Jane managing every aspect of the business. Because it's truly their baby, they know their customers by name, notice when someone misses their weekly visit, recommend the perfect beach read for vacationers, and genuinely enjoy building lasting relationships with everyone who walks through the door.

When asked whether physical books are better than e-readers, Jane offered a thoughtful perspective. "If an e-reader is the way someone reads, then reading in ANY capacity is wonderful." But she believes there's something special about holding a book in your hands. Turning each page creates a connection that a screen simply can't replace. In a world where we're constantly connected to electronic devices, picking up a physical book offers a chance to unplug, relax, and give our minds the break they deserve.

The Recycled Reader also believes in giving back. They accept donated store credits to help teachers build classroom libraries. They donate books, T-shirts, and raffle baskets to community events. During First Fridays, they host local musicians, artists, and authors, creating a space where creativity and community come together.

How can you support them? Share. Share. Share. If you don't see the newest release on the shelf, they'd love the opportunity to order it for you. Hosting a book club? They can order multiple copies and will do their best to offer competitive pricing. Word of mouth has been their greatest advertisement, but many people still don't know this wonderful bookstore exists.

One question made them smile...What section of the bookstore do you hope never goes away? Jane's answer: Contemporary literature. Stories about families, life's challenges, and overcoming obstacles continue to be among her favorites.
